This monument memorializes Brigham Young, one-time president of the Mormon Church and governor of Utah's territory. Along with paying tribute to the famous leader and to Salt Lake City's other forerunners, this site serves as the city's meridian marker, the initial location for the numbering of the city's streets.

DOWNTOWN. This imposing conference center, located just north of Temple Square, is a magnificent addition to Salt Lake City's skyline. The granite structure, with its terraced exterior and rooftop gardens, boasts a waterfall cascading down the building's façade. The main attraction in the complex is its 21,000-seat auditorium, which features an enormous pipe organ and a walnut pulpit. The entire complex is simply but richly furnished with art and sculpture depicting scenes from the Book of Mormon. A motif of the millennium star can be found throughout the space as well. Small group tours are free but do require the accompaniment of a guide.

Description:
Spanning State Street near Temple Square, this structure once marked the entrance to Brigham Young's estate. Although it's been reworked through the years to accommodate wider streets, the gateway is still a landmark in the area. Nowadays, a massive bronze eagle weighing several tons and boasting a 20-foot wingspan tops the structure. The original eagle, a much smaller sculpture carved from wood, is now housed at the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum at 300 North Main Street.

DOWNTOWN. This 28-story building affords magnificent views of greater Salt Lake City. In addition to being a major tourist attraction, it serves as the offices of the Mormon Church. Entry to the observation decks on the 26th floor is free to the public, and the vantage point offers a terrific vista of the Salt Lake Valley. In addition, guided tours point out interesting facts about Utah's tallest structure.
